Survey Field Details

The Field Measurement Book (FMB) is a crucial document used in land surveying, containing detailed measurements, subdivision numbers, and survey numbers near the boundary :

Key Features of FMB:

  • The boundary lines of a survey number are referred to as the “F Line” (Field Boundary Line).

  • A cross line, known as the “G Line,” represents the distance between points A and D.

  • Another G Line runs perpendicular from point E to point B.

  • If a survey stone is missing between two G Lines, its position can be determined using the measurements from the remaining G Line.

  • All measurements in the FMB are recorded in meters.

Scaling in FMB:

The scaling of land area within a single survey number varies based on size:

  • More than 15 acres → 1:5000 scale

  • Smaller areas → 1:2000 scale

  • Very small areas → 1:1000 scale

The FMB serves as a fundamental reference for land records, boundary verification, and property transactions, ensuring precise land measurement and documentation.

Methods for Land Measurement

Land measurement units vary across different regions. In Tamil Nadu, three types of measurement systems are commonly used:

  1. Traditional Local Units – Kuzhi, Maa, Veli, Kaari, Marakka

  2. British System Units – Square Feet, Cent, Acre

  3. Metric Units – Square Meters, Ares, Hectares

  4. However, all official land title documents are recorded using metric units, such as Ares and Hectares.

For accurate land measurements and property transactions, it is essential to understand these units and their conversions.

Land Measurement Units

1 Cent = 40.47 Square meters
1 Acre = 43,560 Square feet
1 Acre = 40.47 Ares
1 Hectare = 10,000 Square meters
1 Cent = 435.6 Square feet
1 Are = 100 Square meters
1 Kuzhi = 144 Square feet
1 Cent = 3 Kuzhi
3 Maa = 1 Acre
1 Acre = 18 Ground
1 Ground = 2,400 Square feet
1. Conversions for Acre

1 Acre = 100 Cent

1 Acre = 0.404694 Hectares

1 Acre = 40.5 Ares

1 Acre = 43,560 Square feet

1 Acre = 4046 Square meters

2. Conversions for Cent

1 Cent = 0.01 Acre

1 Cent = 0.004 Hectare

1 Cent = 0.405 Are

1 Cent = 435.54 Square feet

1 Cent = 40.46 Square meters

3. Conversions for Hectare

1 Hectare = 2.47 Acres

1 Hectare = 247 Cent

1 Hectare = 100 Ares

1 Hectare = 107,637.8 Square feet

1 Hectare = 10,000 Square meters

4. Conversions for Are

1 Are = 2.47 Cent

1 Are = 100 Square meters

1 Are = 1,076 Square feet

5. Length Units

10 Kon = 1 Nunnanu

10 Nunnanu = 1 Anu

8 Anu = 1 Kathirthugal

8 Kathirthul = 1 Thusumpu

8 Thusumpu = 1 Mayirnuni

8 Mayirnuni = 1 Nunnamal

8 Nunnamal = 1 Siru Kadugu

8 Sirukadugu = 1 Ellu

8 Ellu = 1 Nel

8 Nel = 1 Viral

12 Viral = 1 Saan

2 Saan = 1 Muzham

4 Muzham = 1 Paagam

6000 Paagam = 1 Kaadham

4 Kaadham = 1 Yosana

6. Land Measurement Conversion in Tamil Nadu

100 Square Meters = 1 Are

100 Ares = 1 Hectare

1 Square Meter = 10.764 Square Feet

2,400 Square Feet = 1 Manai

144 Square Inches = 1 Square Feet

435.6 Square Feet = 1 Cent

1,000 Square Links = 1 Cent

100 Cent = 1 Acre

1 Lakh Square Links = 1 Acre

2.47 Acres = 1 Hectare

1 Square Yards = 9 Square Feet

1 Acre = 4,840 Square Yards

1 Acre = 4,046.86 Square Meters

1 Acre = 43,560 Square Feet

1 Square Meter = 10.76 Square Feet

1 Guntha = 101.17 Square Meters

1 Guntha = 33 Feet * 33 Feet = 1,089 Square Feet

1 Kuzhi = 144 Square Feet

1 Kuzhi = 13.38 Square Meters

100 Kuzhi = 1 Maa

20 Maa = 1 Veli

3.5 Maa = 1 Acre

6.17 Acres = 1 Veli

18 Kol = 1 Kuzhi

240 Kuzhi = 1 Paadam

In conclusion, understanding and correctly using the appropriate land measurement system, along with accurate unit conversions, ensures precision in land management and legal matters. This is particularly important in regions where multiple measurement systems have been historically used.
